Many of those who travel pointed out that it is easy to go for days, even weeks, without getting a chance to glance at the wall calendar.

Others look at the calendar only to discover that some special indulgence falls TODAY, and we have had no time to properly prepare, to find the prayers and fulfill the conditions necessary to successfully immersing ourselves in the pool of actual graces that indulgences provide.

So, like the paralytic at the pool in John's Gospel, though the Church has stirred the waters, we are often unable to make it to the water's edge in time.

As every well-educated Catholic knows, the Church provides us with plenary indulgences on special days during the year in order to encourage us to honor those days. Like guiding lights along a dark footpath, these little lights of actual grace are given to us throughout the course of the liturgical year so we can enter into every season and practice the presence of God.

We all know indulgences do not save us - that's the work of Christ through the sacraments - but the power of the actual grace they do provide helps us stay on the proper path towards God.
